Candlemas Day

Candlemas Day

Every February in the beautiful port of Tlacotalpan (Veracruz), a celebration is held in honour of the Virgin of Candelaria.

The official opening of the celebrations begins with the traditional procession. Then, in the afternoon, there is an awe-inspiring concert; "The Encounter of the Jaraneros”, held in the Plaza Doña Martha, where beautiful music and songs are played by musicians from all over the country.

The next day, very early in the morning, the traditional bull-running in the Papaloapan River commences.

During the parade of the “Mojiganga" the satire of everyday life can be seen through the characterization of giant puppets made out of papermache. Some of the most interesting and beautiful parts of this parade include the paper mache puppets representing the sun, the moon, La Llorona (The Weeping woman) and of course, Death, although in all honesty, every part of this incredible event down to the decorated boats and canoes lining the river all come together magically to make this one experience you will never forget.

On the 2nd February, the last day of the feast, the faithful attend to sing Las Mañanitas in the chapel of the Virgin, backed by the orchestra of the University of Veracruz. Mass is then performed in honor of the patron saint of the city. A little later, around noon it is time for the blessing of the candles and the procession of the Virgin alongside the Papaloapan River. Local fisherman in their boats & canoes following the procession, each one ornately decorated especially for the festivities with the intention to asking them to be blessed for fruitful fishing trips during the year.
