GUERRERO
Journey of Faith and Silver
Guerrero’s Iconic Landmarks:
Taxco
The old and picturesque mining town of Taxco is nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains, 170 km south of Mexico City.
Its silver production reached its peak in the mid-18th century, consolidating itself as one of the main mining centers in New Spain. During the 20th century, an important industry focused on the production of silver jewelry developed, to which the city owes its fame today and which represents its main economic activity.
Templo Parroquial de Santa Prisca
In the main square stands the iconic church dedicated to the Roman martyrs Santa Prisca and San Sebastián, built with pink stone in an ultra-baroque style.
This church was a donation made by the legendary mining entrepreneur José de la Borda who, in his time, was the richest man in New Spain and who considered that his wealth was due to a divine gift, which he was obliged to return. Upon seeing the completion of the prodigious architectural work, he uttered the words: “What God has given to Borda, Borda returns to God.”
It is possible to say that the Parish Church and Minor Basilica of the Holy Martyrs Prisca and Sebastián is the crowning work of New Spain Baroque.
