QUERÉTARO

Where History and Devotion Intertwine

Querétaro is a city of rich history and profound Catholic devotion. The Temple of Santa Rosa de Viterbo is a stunning example of baroque architecture, captivating visitors with its intricate details. The Convent of the Cross, a site of spiritual significance, preserves a legendary cross said to have grown naturally from a tree.

Querétaro’s Iconic Landmarks:

Templo y Convento Franciscano
de La Santa Cruz

For several centuries it served as the Institute of Propaganda Fide of the Seraphic Order. From this convent, the missions of the Sierra and later also the missions of Alta California were founded by Fray Junípero Serra.

During the historic Siege of Querétaro, Emperor Maximilian was imprisoned in this building. The room he occupied, with its original furnishings, can still be visited.

La Iglesia de Santa Rosa Viterbo

The church of Santa Rosa de Viterbo is considered the baroque gem of the city of Querétaro. It is dedicated to the medieval Italian saint who belonged to the Franciscan tertiary order. The interior of the temple is of extraordinary artistic richness and its gilded altarpieces and the representation of the last supper with life-size figures in the sacristy stand out.

The adjoining convent building was built during the 18th century to house a convent for women and a girls’ school. Its monumental character was due to the large donations it received from wealthy figures of the time and the recognition granted to it by the King of Spain.

Catedral de Querétaro

Also known as the San Felipe Neri Oratory, is a prominent religious and historical site in the city. Built between 1786 and 1804, it features a blend of Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Originally an oratory for the San Felipe Neri order, it became a cathedral in 1921. Its austere pink stone façade contrasts with a richly decorated interior. The cathedral stands as a symbol of faith and colonial heritage in Querétaro.

Iglesia de Santa Clara

It is a church that has one of the interiors with the most beautiful altarpieces in the city. At one time it served as an oratory for the Convent of the Clarisas de San José; which was one of the largest and most important convents in New Spain, founded in 1606 by Don Diego de Tapia, son of the founder of Querétaro.
