TLAXCALA

A Sanctuary of Faith and Miracles

Tlaxcala, Mexico’s smallest state, is rich in Catholic heritage and devotion. The Basilica of Our Lady of Ocotlán, an 18th-century baroque masterpiece, is a major pilgrimage site. It houses the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, believed to have appeared in a burning tree, and continues to inspire faith and reflection among visitors.

Tlaxcala’s Iconic Landmarks:

Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

The temple has a single nave with a gabled roof on the outside and inside it features the splendid Mudejar “alfarje” (a kind of coffered ceiling) that is almost unique in Mexico.

Inside is the chapel of the tertiary order, where the baptismal font is located in which the four senators of Tlaxcala were baptized in 1519. This was a stellar event in the history of the Conquest of Mexico and its subsequent Christianization.

The Open Chapel – like its bell tower – is separated from the temple. This is one of the most original chapels of its kind: it denotes indigenous manufacture interpreting the Isabelline Gothic style.

La Basílica de Ocotlán

It is located on a hill just a few hundred meters from the main square of Tlaxcala. The basilica dates back to the 18th-century and is one of the most original and daring works of popular baroque in Mexico.

The devotion to Our Lady of Ocotlán began in 1541 with her appearance to Juan Diego of Tlaxcala inside the thick trunk of a burned ocote tree (a variety of pine).

Santuario de San Miguel del Milagro

It is located on the top of a mountain practically next to the ruins of what was once the populous pre-Hispanic city of Cacaxtla.

In 1631, the Indian Diego Lázaro had a vision of the Archangel Saint Michael, which caused a spring of water to heal illnesses. A few years later, the now Blessed Juan de Palafox, being bishop of Angelopolis, ordered the construction of the Sanctuary that we admire today.

At a regional level, the devotion to Saint Michael of Miracles is as important as that of the Virgin of Ocotlán.

Parroquia de Santa Inés

The Parroquia de Santa Inés in Zacatelco, Tlaxcala, is a historic 18th-century church built over a 16th-century structure. Its Plateresque façade features ornate pilasters and Ionic capitals. Inside, it houses a Baroque wooden altarpiece dedicated to Saint Agnes, and a dome inspired by Puebla’s cathedral. The church also preserves a 17th-century basalt font and a 1650 pipe organ. Redesigned in 1958 by artist Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin, the parish remains a key cultural and religious landmark in Tlaxcala.
